Rosie, Akron's Tunnel Boring Machine

Large tunnels, such as the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel, are created using tunnel boring machines (TBM). Akron's TBM is named Rosie, in honor of Rose May Jacob, Akron's own Rosie the Riveter.

Rosie is currently being assembled at the Robbins Company in nearby Solon, Ohio. Once assembled and tested, the TBM will be delivered in pieces to the OCIT-1 site.

The Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel team is making final preparations to Rosie so she can begin her journey under Akron. The “initial push off" ring has been built and is currently inside of the machine. Over the next week, more rings will be built to move Rosie closer to the entry portal and mining operations (with actual earth contact) are set to begin Monday, Oct. 9, 2017. We will have a progress map on our website once operations begin and we will have a table set up from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. from Oct. 9 – Oct. 12 to answer questions at the overlook site on Hickory Street.
